Then I noticed in synaptic that in addition to the Tor Brower entry, there's a Tor Browser Bundle Settings install. That gave me a launch icon in my top panel but it doesn't do anything. So I uninstalled it and tried the download and install instructions on the Tor website, here.
Don't understand why it's there, because it doesn't work. I mean, it turns up in a search, and you can click on it to install. I supposed - incorrectly - that Tor can be installed from the synaptic package manager.
Because, yes, the answer is already out there somewhere to be found but I can't come across the right search string that will bring it up. You don't have to answer the post if it angers you.
